The social services sector plays a critical role in New York. Facing such challenges as widening inequality, rising homelessness and an aging population, city and state governments often rely heavily on nonprofit organizations to provide care for the neediest among us. Social services nonprofits offer everything from mental and behavioral health services to programs for young children, teenagers and older adults to services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities – and much more. The sector makes up a significant share of the economy, although many nonprofits struggle to secure funding, get paid in a timely manner and recruit enough workers to carry out their work.
